American SavageAmerican Savage: Insights, Slights, and Fights on Faith, Sex, Love, and Politics
by Dan Savage
Dutton. 301 pages, $26.95

DAN SAVAGE, who turns fifty next year, once the enfant terrible of gay agitprop, has become the Ward Cleaver of the gay community (the father on Leave It to Beaver, for those too young to remember), the wise father who always knows just what to tell the boys. In The Kid: What Happened after My Boyfriend and I Decided to Go Get Pregnant (2000), Savage detailed the adoption of their infant son. In The Commitment: Love, Sex, Marriage and My Family (2006), he provided guidance on marriage and family life. In American Savage, the longtime sex columnist for Seattle’s The Stranger gives more fatherly wisdom to GLBT families through accounts of his own family life with husband Terry and son D.J. And it is well worth reading.
