SINCE RUSSIA’S WAR of aggression began on 24 February 2022, the lives of everyday Ukrainians have fundamentally changed. Many people in Ukraine’s lgbtq community are fighting in the military to repel Russian forces and liberate their homeland. Andrii Kravchuk is a Ukrainian lgbtq activist, one of the founders of the Nash Mir (Our World) Gay and Lesbian Centre, Ukraine’s leading lgbtq advocacy center, and is currently working to support the country’s lgbtq community, which is under siege.

If we are to truly honor all of the Nazis’ LGBT victims, we must not only continue to bear witness to their suffering but also commit to combating the ideologies, policies, and laws that robbed them of their humanity and ultimately their lives. International Holocaust Remembrance Day is a call to remember and also to act.

DURING the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the Third Committee adopted the resolution “Strengthening the role of the United Nations in the promotion of democratization and enhancing periodic and genuine elections,” which included an explicit reference to sexual orientation and gender identity. This is only the second UNGA resolution that explicitly mentions these two categories.
